Ministry of Coal Accelerates Adoption of Solar Energy Solutions

-The Ministry of Coal issues directives to coal companies to speed up the adoption of solar energy solutions to reduce the carbon footprints of mining operations.

-Coal companies are instructed to install rooftop solar panels on all government buildings and establish solar projects in de-coaled areas and other suitable lands.

-Leading coal companies, including Coal India Limited, NLC India Limited, and SCCL, currently have approximately 1700 MW of combined solar capacity, with plans to increase it to over 9 GW by 2030.

-Ambitious net-zero electricity consumption plan set for Coal/Lignite PSUs, aiming to achieve 50% cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.

-Initiative to develop solar parks within reclaimed mining areas and other suitable lands aligns with the government’s updated NDC target and promotes environmental preservation and economic growth.
